What is a retaining wall, exactly?

Retaining walls are used widely in residential and commercial locations to address a number of problems pertaining to the geography of your property.  Examples include, managing storm water and erosion problems, creating more usable (flat) space on your property (such as parking areas or yard space), creating garden areas for landscape beds, and much more.  Not only do they solve important problems that enhance the function and usability for your space, but they also provide a fantastic boost for your curb appeal.

Why should I invest in a retaining wall?

Functional Enhancements For Your Property

Retaining walls help to substantially improve the function of your exterior space.  Common use cases include creating planting beds, creating usable level space in the yard, holding back hillsides to create more usable parking space in the driveway, controlling storm water and eliminating erosion and sediment movement problems, and much more.  A well-placed and properly designed retaining wall can drastically improve the value of your home both functionally and financially.

Aesthetic Enhancements For Your Property

A well thought out retaining wall project can provide a striking boost for your home's curb appeal.  They bring an interesting combination of form, color, and texture to the landscape and provide perfect contrast and definition with and among the other elements of your outdoor space.

Return on Investment

Our professionally installed retaining walls last for many decades under normal circumstances, and can easily provide a staggering transformation for your property.  This type of enhancement translates to real-world dollars when it comes time to sell your home.  Additionally, you get to enjoy the functional and aesthetic improvements for your lifestyle.

What are the most common types of retaining walls?

Wooden Construction

Railroad Ties

Railroad ties are the wooden timbers used in the construction of railways (under the tracks) used to be an extremely popular choice for retaining wall construction. The railroad ties were installed directly on top of the soil, usually with one or two courses of the wall below grade. This type of wall construction will usually last for around 15-20 years, at which point the wood will deteriorate significantly and will become structurally unstable, and ultimately fail if there is any load applied to the wall. A large number of our projects involve replacing this type of wall system after it fails or when it is close to failure. While railroad ties are a decent choice if you are on a budget, they are coated in harmful and foul-smelling chemical known as "creosote", which is used to extend the life of the material.

Landscape Timbers

These are the pressure-treated wooden timbers that you would find at your local big-box stores such as Home Depot or Lowe's. These are smaller than railroad ties, and usually have dimensions of 4 x 6 or 6 x 6 inches, and come in various lengths. These are treated with a preservative material making them last longer in exterior applications. These are economical, and easy to work with for the DIY crowd, however, don't expect them to last more than 10-15 years at most.

Stone Construction

Mortarless

Quite often, you will see retaining walls constructed using natural field stones or boulders, using a mortar less technique known as "dry-stack". In this method, the stones are simply fitted and stacked by hand, manually. Special care is given to the selection of stones with the best shape and size, so as to achieve the tightest possible fit for each stone along the way. As you can imagine, this is a tedious, and time-consuming process. Walls of this type are not suitable for load-bearing applications, and are best kept under 3 feet high, and for applications focused mostly on aesthetic goals.

Mortared

A mortared stone wall is essentially the same things as the above mortarless design, except for the fact that concrete mortar is used to bond the stones together. This results in a different look, and a wall with greater structural integrity. Walls of this type are still not suitable for load-bearing applications, and are best kept under 3-4 feet high.

Concrete Construction

Cast In Place

This refers to a concrete wall system that is poured and cast in place using concrete forms, which results in what is a solid concrete wall structure. This design is common in the commercial world, and is suitable for large scale construction applications.

Masonry

This refers to a wall constructed with concrete blocks (just like those used for a house foundation). These blocks are mortared together, and can appear as is, or with a brick/stone veneer product. In the latter case, the bricks or stones are mortared onto the outside of the concrete blocks.

Segmented Pre-Cast

This type is the type that you see in our pictures, and the primary type we install. They offer fantastic value in the form of function, aesthetics, durability and economics. Pre-cast concrete wall systems install quickly, can be adapted to any site conditions, and are suitable for all applications, including load=bearing. This type of wall system usually offers the most value for the money spent when you consider aesthetics, functional capabilities, durability, and economy.

What is the best kind of retaining wall to build?

We install the segmented pre-cast wall systems, exclusively.  We offer this type of wall system exclusively because we feel that it is represents the best overall value for our customers, and it lends itself exceptionally well to our cohesive landscape design with the plethora of options for size, shape, texture, and color.  We can even incorporate water features and landscape lighting with your wall project.

How do you build a retaining wall?

The construction process for building a segmented pre-cast retaining wall is not overly complicated, but it does require a specific process to be followed carefully in order to build it successfully and safely.  We begin with site layout, which is the process of locating where the wall will be, determining elevations and grades, and identifying any potential problems that require special attention.

Once all of the underground utilities have been properly located and marked, it is time to begin with demolition and excavation to remove any soil or existing structures to make room for the new wall and its foundation.  This is the stage of the project which usually creates the most disturbance or messiness for your property, however, our skilled team is always proactive to minimize any disturbance or clutter as much as possible.

Once excavation is complete, we will proceed with installation of the foundation or footing for the wall system.  This is the installation of a depth of special aggregate material which gets highly compacted, and then leveled to prepare a solid foundation to build on.

At this point, it's time to install the first course of blocks.  This is a slow and tedious part of the job, as every single block has to be meticulously leveled from side-to-side, and front-to-back.  Additionally, each of these blocks will need to be installed within the same plane.

At this point we begin to install additional courses of block on top of the first course.  We will also be installing the drainage system during this time since it is located directly behind the first course.  Blocks are core-filled with drainage stone (3/4 inch limestone), and the wall is back-filled with the same as each additional course is installed.

Eventually, we get all of the wall installed, and now it is time to install the wall caps.  These are the decorative units that finish the top of the wall for an attractive appearance.  Once that's done, it's time to clean up the job site and repair any turf or other areas that were impacted by the construction activities.

How long does it take to build a retaining wall?

The time required to build and complete a segmented pre-cast retaining wall project varies widely, based on the size of the wall, site conditions, weather, etc.  In the case of a typical residential wall installation, let's use an example to provide some context.  For a wall that is to be 4 feet high and 100 feet long, you could expect anywhere from 1-3 weeks on average.  This assumes good weather, and a job with minimal complexity (flat area with little or no slope to deal with, no embedded stairs, etc.).  Adding stairs, or building on a slope (in the same direction of the wall), foul weather, poor access for equipment, or walls higher than 4 feet are all examples of things which would add complexity and time to the project.  Contact us if you'd like to get some more information on turnaround time for a wall project for your property.

How much does it cost to build a retaining wall?

Cost varies widely when it comes to building a retaining wall project.  Our pricing is always custom for each job, as we will need to consider the unique and specific conditions of your home and your project.  However, on average, many of our retaining wall projects fall in the $10,000 - $30,000 range.
